Symptoms of Memory Loss

Infokito - Memory loss, commonly referred to as amnesia is the inability of individuals to recall details and is associated with a high degree of forgetfulness. It is also associated with the inability of the human brain to process, retrieve or store information. Memory loss can be categorized as total or partial and it can be a temporary phenomenon or a permanent one. The human brain selects as well as stores information in different ways and this can be categorized into two types, namely short term memory and long term memory.

Some of the tell tale symptoms of memory loss are forgetting names, dates, events, having difficulty retaining information, getting lost easily, forgetting to run errands and even forgetting tasks that the individuals were once familiar with such as driving. While there are a variety of symptoms associated with memory loss, these symptoms and their intensity varies from individual to individual, depending on the conditions causing the memory loss.

Some of the first symptoms of memory loss could be decreased levels of alertness as well as increased levels of confusion. Serious illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease that affects the brain, especially in older individuals could also be a symptom of memory loss too. While forgetting information may not be a serious as well as a worrying symptom of memory loss, it is when people tend to have problems with words or even trouble understanding what is being said to them or not being able to make a decision is when medical attention needs to be sought. Another common symptom of memory loss is linked to concentration. People suffering from memory loss problems often have problems concentrating.

Medical help needs to be sought if any changes are noticed in an individual’s normal way of being and lifestyle when accompanied with the above mentioned symptoms.  A medical practitioner would have to examine the complete medical records of a patient as well as conduct a battery of tests such as neuropsychological tests and other exams such as an MRI, an electroencephalography or a CT scan to be able to arrive at a right diagnosis.
